Esteemed Colleague,

The idea of microschools is generating growing interest across the education landscape. However, this rising interest might feel irrelevant to your local context. I want to share why they are more relevant today than ever before and, specifically, how microschools strengthen public education instead of fragmenting it.

WHAT IS YOUR

FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE?

District leaders rarely lack vision. More often, they lack coherence. In the midst of competing initiatives and urgent demands, a Framework for the Future offers a shared north star for families, learners, staff, and admin: a clear articulation of what success looks like for learners and how the system will work together to achieve it. More than a strategic plan, it becomes a living reference point that aligns decisions, resources, and long-term learner-centered goals.

This was evident in Mentor Public Schools, where the Framework for the Future process surfaced strong alignment across the community around hopes and aspirations for young people. Those shared commitments were captured in Mentor’s Portrait of a Learner and translated into focused Big Moves that turned vision into action.

One standout priority was Cultivating Strong Community Partnerships. Through intentional relationship-building and the launch of Cardinal Connect, Mentor created a visible infrastructure connecting educators and learners with community partners. Anchored in the Framework for the Future, this work moved beyond a single initiative and became part of how the district expands real-world learning and reinforces a learner-centered ecosystem across schools.

For districts navigating complexity and change, a Framework for the Future provides both clarity and momentum. If you’re ready to turn learner-centered aspirations into coherent, system-level action, we invite you to connect with us to learn how the Framework for the Future process can support your district’s next chapter.

"Davis Joint Unified School District gathered educators and learners for their first session to begin the process of developing progressions, shared language that all educators and learners can use to discuss what it looks like for learners to demonstrate their Portrait of a Learner competencies. Together, they grounded in the purpose of the work, explored case studies, and engaged in collaborative sense-making to strengthen a shared vision for how these outcomes can be used across the system." ~Holly Stipe

"The Templeton USD Guiding Coalition met to deepen shared understanding of the Portrait of a Learner, Learning Model, and Blueprint. Together, they explored how the pieces fit together and continued designing, iterating, and building clarity toward developing their Framework for the Future." ~Kelly Williams

"Kanuikapono, a Hawaiian-focused charter school on Kauai, kicked off its Framework for the Future with a Discovery Visit and Leadership Retreat. Staff, families, and students offered their perspectives on what they love about the school and how it could be even better. Leaders gathered to ensure alignment of strategy and key actions as they move into this process." ~Meg Parry
