Why using a mixed-methods approach leads to learner-centered change.

Esteemed Colleague,

When we talk about measuring impact, we can look at it through multiple lenses. There’s individual impact (e.g. students and adults) and there's systemic impact (e.g. programs, schools, districts).

Understanding the whole picture is complex. Individual and collective learning, along with the systems that enable it, contain countless interacting variables. To honor this complexity, we need to measure what matters, not what’s easy or most efficient.

This month, I explore why we need to shift what we measure in education, where we can go for inspiration, and what we can create in our individual communities to measure learner-centered outcomes. Take a look at my blog post here and let me know what new ideas or questions come to mind for you!

MEASURING IMPACT WITH TODAY'S TECHOLOGICAL ADVANCMENTS

Techademics (with support from LearnerStudio) recently published a new paper, "The Future Tech Stack: Reimagining Requirements for Learner-Centered Futures." I had the privilege of providing domain expertise and technical advisement on the paper, which calls for an education technology ecosystem that is modular, interoperable, and rooted in human connection.

At Learner-Centered Collaborative, we see a clear throughline between this vision and our work helping partners measure what matters. Our Scorecard Institute service supports school and district teams with co-designing desired outcomes, identifying success metrics and data sources, and setting everything up in a clean and comprehensive dashboard that can be shared with stakeholders. Ultimately, we help turn abstract outcomes like agency, collaboration, and well-being into visible indicators of growth.

Much like the report’s emphasis on shared governance and feedback loops, our approach ensures measurement becomes a learning process itself. The result is greater coherence, transparency, and alignment between what communities value and what they measure.

If your learning community is ready to make progress toward your school or district's vision visible in ways that empower learners, our team would love to help you build your own learner-centered scorecard. Contact our team to explore what that could look like for your district.

"Templeton educators came together for a powerful day of learning and collaboration. We spent time deepening our shared understanding of the Portrait of a Learner, gathering another round of thoughtful feedback on the competencies, and exploring practical strategies to bring the Portrait to life across classrooms, schools, and roles." ~Kelly Williams

"Adelanto Elementary School District educators took an exciting step toward bringing their Framework for the Future to life during the first of three Project-Based Learning workshop days. Superintendent Dr. Terry Walker set the tone with a warm welcome, and teachers dove into an immersive design experience. Throughout the workshop, teachers will explore key elements of PBL, brainstorm and create authentic projects, and collaborate to craft learner-centered experiences. " ~Holly Stipe

"We had a blast in our pre-conference session on Breaking Up With Grades at the FullScale Symposium in New Orleans with teams from Colorado, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Missouri, Montana, California, and more. Grateful for the amazing leaders who are interrogating their beliefs and practices around assessment and reporting to create more learner-centered ecosystems." ~Katie Martin
