Your weekly source of learner-centered inspiration
July 18, 2024
Dear Educator,
It’s hard to put into words (or pictures) the gratitude I feel after an amazing Learner-Centered Collaborative retreat at Lone Rock in Bailey, Colorado. I work with 19 of the most incredible humans who put their talent, expertise, and care into our work to ensure all learners know themselves, thrive in community, and actively engage in the world as their best selves.
Yet, our work would not be possible without the learner-centered leaders we work with as partners to make an impact across districts, schools, and classrooms.
This week, staff and partners came together to connect, reflect, and learn. The collaboration far exceeded my expectations. The relationships, joy, and empathy we built and deepened will have a lasting impact on the education ecosystem for years to come.
Reflecting on our time together, I want to highlight the power of slowing down to go fast in this week's Bright Spots.
With Gratitude,
BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK
Slowing Down to Go Fast
There is a lot of attention on teacher burnout and retention (as there should be), and many leaders are relentlessly working to support educators and create a system that meets the needs of all learners. On this quest, many of these leaders carry enormous weight on their shoulders and often do it alone.
I watched eight such leaders come together last week to share their experiences, reflect on their values, and express their aspirations for the future. I saw walls come down. Across four days, the connections deepened, authenticity abounded, and a sense of possibility through community grew. I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes by David Whyte: "The antidote to exhaustion isn't rest. It's wholeheartedness."
In the rhythm of a school year, we can find ourselves on the hamster wheel and run until we are exhausted, while rarely feeling like it is ever enough. This leads to burnout.
Instead, what if you gave yourself permission and created opportunities for those you serve to slow down, connect, and fill your hearts—to be wholehearted—so you can go further, together? I'd love to hear how it goes!
