Dear Educator,

The end of the year is for reflecting, curating, and sharing the most powerful learning. Last week, my colleague Brittany Griffin created the space to do just that as host of our National Student Exhibition Experience.

It was inspiring to see the clarity, confidence, reflection, and ownership these young people demonstrated as they articulated who they are becoming as learners and humans.

Across middle and high school students from Hawaii to Pennsylvania, learners shared growth in communication, collaboration, perseverance, leadership, creativity, and purpose through authentic exhibitions tied directly to their school’s Portrait of a Learner.

This week, I want to dive into this exhibition experience and why it was so meaningful for the learner-centered movement.

A National Student Exhibition Experience

We heard an eighth grader from Hawaii reflect on her journey from a nervous new student to a confident ambassador representing her school publicly. We watched sixth graders share original poetry and personal commitments for how they want to thrive in their communities. We saw a freshman share about her strengths in academics, creative thinking, and assertiveness.

We listened to a senior explain how building a business club and improving his writing over time taught him perseverance and leadership. We saw an award-winning documentary created by two middle school students who interviewed members of their community experiencing homelessness because they wanted to create something meaningful—not just complete an assignment for a grade.

And perhaps most powerfully, we saw students publicly thank the adults who believed in them, inspired them, and helped shape their growth.

These exhibitions reminded all of us that when young people are given voice, authentic work, meaningful feedback, and opportunities to reflect on their growth, they rise to the occasion. They don’t just demonstrate learning—they learn to own it, communicate it, and connect it to who they are becoming. That is the kind of learning that sticks long after a test is over.
