These leaders aren’t just talking about improvement; they’re actively calibrating what matters by grounding their thinking in real classrooms and with real learners. Gaining Inspiration From Our Youngest Learners

In Cardiff, we saw what’s possible when high expectations meet thoughtful design. In classrooms of 5 to 7-year-olds, foundational skill-building lived right alongside personalized support and authentic work. Learners were researching topics of their choosing, creating videos, and engaging in rich, meaningful discourse—all with a palpable sense of joy and ownership.

What stood out most was the level of agency these young learners carried. They were making real choices about their learning, thinking deeply, and expressing their ideas with confidence. It was a powerful reminder that when we build the right conditions—clarity, support, and belief in what’s possible—young children exceed expectations in ways that are both inspiring and instructive for all of us.

In addition to making choices about their individual learning, students should be invited to engage in classroom decisions that affect them, their peers, and their educators. This is more than just listening to students’ opinions and taking them into consideration. It's about actually bringing students to the decision-making table and giving them equal power. Resources to advance your learner-centered practice

📖 Making Learning Feel Real With Community Engagement in the Classroom. "When we open the doors to local experts and leaders, the entire energy of the classroom changes. It is no longer about completing a task for a grade; it's about participating in a conversation that matters." Check out these 3rd-grade examples.

🎯 System-Wide Big Moves: Student-Led Advisory Councils or Boards. "Inviting students to participate in school or district-wide decisions by being on the board, a part of a student government, or on an ongoing advisory council gives them a direct way to influence decisions that affect them and their peers.
