Dear Educator,

A new year often begins with energy—goals set, possibilities imagined, and optimism high. Then life happens. Competing priorities emerge, uncertainty creeps in, and motivation can fade.

In those moments, what matters most isn’t just clarity of purpose, but connection. Community becomes the force that helps us keep going—especially when the path forward isn’t clear, and the work feels heavy. When things get hard, being surrounded by others who are rowing in the same direction can reignite belief, courage, and momentum.

Let's take a look at how one community of educators is moving forward on their learner-centered journey, together.

With Gratitude,

Committing to Mission-Aligned Accountability

Last week, we held our mid-year convening for the Mission-Aligned Accountability work with the Hawai’i State Public Charter School Commission. Ten site teams came together to surface real and competing challenges, lift up what’s working, and examine areas of misalignment across federal and state regulations, scorecards, local metrics, performance assessments, and learning experiences.

What emerged was powerful: shared understanding and collective opportunity. By naming challenges honestly and celebrating progress openly, we identified ways for all parties to better align and row toward the goal together—becoming more efficient, effective, and impactful.

As one leader reminded us, change often happens slowly. But when we pause to step back and recognize how far we’ve come, the journey feels possible and worth it. Community is the connective tissue that sustains this work. Coming together reminds leaders that they are not isolated—they are in it together. Change is hard, but sitting back and waiting is harder when you are committed to seeing learners and learning flourish.

How are you leaning into change? What roadblocks are slowing your progress? Connect with our team of learner-centered changemakers to see how we can support your community's vision for learning.

Resources to advance your learner-centered practice

📖 What an 8th-Grade Defense Taught Me About Competency-Based Learning. "When I’m given the freedom to choose how I approach an assignment, the quality of my work improves; not because it’s easier, but because I’m invested." Read more about this competency-based learning experience.

🌍 Bring the Real World into the Classroom. "Blurring the boundaries between the classroom and the real world doesn’t only mean physically bringing learners outside the classroom walls. Equally important is bringing the real world into the classroom by connecting students with content experts, community members, or governmental organizations, or by using technology to go on virtual field trips." Learn how from educators like you.

🧑‍🏫 System-Wide Big Move: Coaching and Mentoring Programs. "Transforming schools into learner-centered environments begins with investing in the people closest to students– teachers. Coaching and mentoring are not just supports– they are catalysts for lasting change." Discover what these programs might look like in your environment.
