Your weekly source of learner-centered inspiration
February 15, 2024
Dear Educator,
Like many of you, I started this week watching the Super Bowl and, of course, the commercials! One that caught my attention was Copilot, an AI app. As I watched this commercial, I immediately downloaded the app and started thinking about how it connected to education. If you haven’t seen it, it starts off with people being told what they can’t do for various reasons and then proceeding to show what they can create with the help of AI.
It got me thinking about how we tell kids what they can’t do, often because of our own limitations and/or fears. What if we as educators started to get more curious about the tools and opportunities that exist?
With Gratitude,
We want to hear from you! Share your Learner-Centered Bright Spot with us here.
BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK
Permission to Try AI
At an event this week at the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education, I co-facilitated a session for Superintendents from Delaware County Intermediate Unit in Pennsylvania with Ed Dieterle. As I discussed why and how we can create learner-centered systems I shared the 4Ps: Give Permission, Offer Protection, Remove Policies and Eliminate Perfectionism, and Ed highlighted research and examples supporting a Holistic Approach to AI.
We watched the commercial and my Bright Spot came from a reflection that one of the superintendents shared:
We can leverage the 4Ps to effectively support teachers to use AI, and emerging technology.
As we chatted more, I learned about how many of these forward thinking superintendents are giving educators permission to play and are working with them to learn how to best leverage the tools in service of their learning goals.
With AI-powered tools and technologies, educators can personalize instruction, adapt content to individual needs, and provide targeted student support. Intelligent tutoring systems can offer real-time feedback, identify knowledge gaps, and suggest tailored learning resources. Virtual reality and augmented reality can immerse students in interactive and engaging learning environments. As educators, we can harness these technological advancements to create dynamic and effective learning experiences.
