BRIGHT SPOTS

Your weekly source of learner-centered inspiration

Dear Educator,

Student engagement is paramount in education. If students aren’t engaged, they won’t invest in the content, attain mastery, and ultimately apply what they are learning. In a world full of distractions, I often hear that kids aren’t engaged in school from both students and teachers. This is frustrating for both as there is a great deal of time and energy put into a young person’s education and if they aren’t engaged, we aren’t going to reach the outcomes we desire.

This week I want to highlight some research on engagement that comes from The Gallup Student Poll.

BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK

The inextricable link of engagement and belonging

Gallup has studied engagement for decades and has collected feedback from millions of surveys on engagement, which they define as “a measurement of how involved, enthusiastic and committed one is to an organization.” They found that when students strongly agreed with the following statements, they were 30 times more likely to be engaged in school.

Engagement and Belonging

Sometimes we get stuck in the trap of thinking we need more technology or a better curriculum. This data shows us that we might be focusing on the wrong things. More stuff isn’t always the answer. The biggest impact on student engagement is a culture of caring adults who see the strengths in each of their students, get to know them, support their aspirations, connect with them, and help them grow.
