Your weekly source of learner-centered inspiration
Dear Educator,
As we work to help learners grow and improve, it can be easy to focus on what is wrong with learners instead of what is right. When we honor the uniqueness of individuals and ensure that they have what they need, they are more likely to go above and beyond and exceed our expectations.
In this week’s issue of Bright Spots, I am excited to explore what’s possible when we believe in learners’ ability to become their best selves.
Warmly, Katie
BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK
From Educator Expectations to Learner Outcomes
Have you heard of the Pygmalion Effect? Research shows that when educators have positive expectations for their students, they influence performance positively. Likewise, negative expectations influence performance negatively. The Pygmalion Effect describes this reinforcing cycle in which beliefs shape expectations, which in turn shape actions and behaviors that impact outcomes for better and for worse. This article from Duquesne University describes the research in more detail. The Pygmalion Effect presents us with challenges, but also opportunities. By believing our students can achieve particular learning outcomes, we can help create the conditions for them to learn and grow.
