Dear Educator,

I had the opportunity to join a virtual session led by Brittany Griffin, Director of Strategic Partnerships, which brought together educators across Utah. I was blown away by the educators who were collaborating, learning and testing out new ideas in the last days of school!

My Bright Spot this week comes directly from the teachers in this session who shared, “We all want to do what is best for learners, but change can be hard.”

I believe they embody the passion and drive of so many educators who feel the same.

I want to highlight how small steps to shift practice can lead to powerful opportunities and outcomes for learners.

BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK

Designing Competency-Based Experiences for Learners

Over the course of 3 learning cycles, educators focused on Competency-Based practices to build new skills, practice in a safe environment with colleagues and set personal goals based on the type of learning experience they are focused on.

The educators experienced competency-based practices and reflected on what they were learning as they designed and tested out their ideas. Here were their key takeaways:

Data can be used to create impact for learners.
Learners liked being in charge of their learning and set their own goals based on their self assessment.
Choice was a powerful driver for students and teachers alike.

The best part is that both teachers and principal were participating and designing experiences for the learners they serve. As we know, teachers create what they experience.
