Dear Educator,

This week marks 2 years since Devin Vodicka, our CEO at Learner-Centered Collaborative, published his book Learner-Centered Leadership. The book is based on his time leading the Vista Unified School District, and it is backed by research on transformational leadership. It’s an incredible book with both an aspirational vision and concrete steps that led to incredible impact on students, teachers, administrators, families and the educational community at large. One of my favorite parts of this book, and Devin’s leadership philosophy, is the focus on listening to learners to inform and inspire what is possible in education.

For this week’s Bright Spot, I want to share how we have continued to listen to learners to inform and inspire our work at the Learner-Centered Collaborative.

BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK

Engaging Learners in Their Learning Journey

Cesar Morales, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Learner-Centered Collaborative, kicked off our partnership with Laguna Beach Unified School District by engaging learners in conversations about their experience.

Using the “Bright Spots / Key Challenges / Questions / Ideas” protocol, students were guided through a conversation, and then provided an opportunity to individually reflect on their personal academic experiences. Afterwards, learners were given the opportunity to work collaboratively to summarize their collective academic journey.

Students from Laguna Beach Unified School District collaborate with one another to discuss their collective learning experiences.

Listening to students is at the heart of learner-centered education and is imperative when designing a learner profile. Engaging learners in this critical step of the process allows district and school leaders to build trust and solicit input from their learners.
