Your weekly source of learner-centered inspiration
Dear Educator,
We are in week 2 of our Learner-Centered Collaborative Book Club, and this week is all about the question: “How can we create the most meaningful learning experiences?” In our breakout rooms, one group shared that teachers need personalized learning experiences just as much as their students! I couldn’t agree more. I often say "teachers create what they experience," and if they don’t experience new and different practices how can they create those experiences for students. This drives home the message that everyone in the system should be learning, evolving, and trying new things in service of creating the most effective learning experiences for all.
In this week’s Bright Spot, I want to highlight the impact that personalized, professional learning for educators ultimately has on students.
With Gratitude, Katie

BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK
Personalized Professional Learning
In February, I got to spend the day with educators in Mesa Union School District. We are working with a guiding coalition of families, educators, and community partners to design their Framework for the Future—a shared vision, learner profile, and learning model that clearly defines the community’s aspirations. At the same time, we are working with teachers to elevate practices that align with these aspirations and to leverage new strategies for creating more authentic, personalized and competency-based learning environments.
I created a choice board for the educators to explore and pick one activity to design. They had so many great ideas and ways to apply their learning to their unique grade level, content, and goals. Their accountability was to try something out so that we could reflect and share what worked, what needs to be revised, and what the next steps might be.
I was so happy to see their superintendent, Dr. Raul Ramirez, highlight Mrs. Roberson’s use of choice boards to personalize learning for her students in math.
I love seeing the impact of what is possible when educators are given clear outcomes along with the time, resources, and support to try something new in order to meet those outcomes in a way that works for them and their students.
